How to configure an HTTPS proxy on macOS

This guide covers a macOS proxy configuration that specifically requires a certificate supplied by Proxy-Cheap Support. For standard HTTP proxy connections, including HTTPS browsing through CONNECT, use our general macOS proxy setup guide instead.

Important: Only install a certificate when Proxy-Cheap Support has confirmed why it is required for your configuration and provided the certificate, destination keychain, and required trust settings. Verify its source and purpose before continuing.

Install the certificate

  1. Download the certificate file provided by Proxy-Cheap Support and open it.
  1. When Keychain Access asks where to add the certificate, select the keychain specified by Proxy-Cheap Support and click Add.
  1. Open Keychain Access and select the keychain where you added the certificate.
  2. Select Certificates and search for the Proxy-Cheap certificate.
  3. Double-click the certificate and expand the Trust section.
  4. Apply only the trust settings specified by Proxy-Cheap Support for this certificate. Select Always Trust only if their instructions explicitly require it.
  5. Close the certificate window and enter your Mac password or use Touch ID when prompted.

Configure the proxy for HTTPS websites

These settings select a proxy for HTTPS website traffic. They do not by themselves enable TLS encryption between your Mac and the proxy server. If your configuration requires a TLS connection to the proxy, follow the client-specific instructions provided by Support.

  1. Open the Apple menu and select System Settings.
  2. Select Network, then choose the Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection you are currently using.
  3. Click Details, then select Proxies.
  4. Turn on Secure Web Proxy (HTTPS).
  5. Enter the proxy server address and port shown in your Proxy-Cheap dashboard.
  6. If your proxy uses username and password authentication, turn on Proxy server requires password and enter your proxy username and password.
  7. Click OK to save the settings.

Test the connection

Open an IP-check website in a browser that uses macOS system proxy settings. Confirm that it displays the proxy IP or proxy exit IP.

If macOS or your browser requests authentication, enter the same proxy username and password shown in your Proxy-Cheap dashboard.

Some applications do not use the macOS system proxy settings and may require a separate proxy configuration.
